Mad cows, foot and mouth and EU directives have each helped to change the British landscape over the years.  Many farmers have given up the fight but, despite these challenges, some remain successful through diversification and refocusing.
One local example is Stetchworth Estate Farms who won two awards at the 2006 NBA Business Awards.  The judges commented that; “The winning business has recognised that the field in which they work has changed greatly and will continue to do so.  Through successful diversification, an ethical approach and best use of working assets they have shown a breadth of entrepreneurship which is astounding for their sector.”
Stetchworth Estate shows a real commitment to wildlife and habitat conservation and enhancement by ensuring that, wherever possible, all operations are undertaken in environmentally friendly ways.  Specifically, by the use of particular seed crops for the benefit of local bird species and additionally, by the provision of other stewardship options to deliver undisturbed and unsprayed winter stubbles for seed and insect food supply to over wintering birds and habitat for small mammals, deer and brown hare.
This is your opportunity to see for yourself why Stetchworth Estate Farm won their awards, how they are committed to environmental concerns and how the business has been dealing with increased challenges since the European Agricultural policy changes came into force in 2005.  Guests will be taken on a tour of the estate on trailers and would be advised to dress for such conditions.  A picnic breakfast will be provided to enjoy during the tour.
